Art Gone Wild patrons can enjoy wine, beer, and hors d'oeuvres as they peruse inspired works available for purchase by some of the zoos artists in residence. Many animals at Knoxville Zoo are trained to paint in the traditional sense, using brushes and/or fingers, including chimpanzees, gorillas, and elephants. Many more paint by walking over or stamping the canvas in a variety of colors. These paw painters include lions, tigers, meerkats, bears, Komodo dragons, penguins and much more! All artwork is matted, most include a photo of the artist, and all include a certificate of authenticity with the artist’s name. Cost for this event is $25 for members and $30 for non-members. This is an adult ages 18+ (need photo ID to enter) only event.
The proceeds from these products help support the enrichment program at Knoxville Zoological Gardens. The Knoxville Zoo's enrichment program strives to promote the physical and psychological wellbeing of the animals in the zoo's collection. The use of permanent exhibit items, training sessions, painting, and the introduction of novel items, scents, and foods are used to help stimulate natural behaviors and reduce the occurrence of stereotypical behaviors. The goal of enrichment is to provide an opportunity for an animal to satisfy its natural behavioral needs, optimize its levels of stimulation, and create an unpredictable environment, which in turn contributes to improving the success of captive breeding programs, overall health of the animal, and improves the adaptability of an animal to a new situation.
