Zoo Green Practices
One of the main goals of Knoxville
Zoo is conservation of natural resources. We have had many
successes in captive breeding, education, research, and wildlife
reintroduction; and we continue to strive in these areas.
In 2002, it was decided that Knoxville Zoo could further its
goal of conservation by forming a Green Team. This team was
created to help monitor resource use at the zoo, make suggestions
for more efficient use of these resources, and to act as a
sounding board for ideas and troubleshooting. Staff members
voluntarily take time out of their day to work on the Green
Team, and any staff member or volunteer can help.
Knoxville Zoo encourages all businesses
to create a Green Team to help them become more efficient
and environmentally friendly. As well as saving money and
resources, a conservation-minded business is looked upon more
favorably by customers in this increasingly environmentally
concerned and aware society.
Knoxville Zoo is working hard in
an effort to save wildlife. However, animals cannot survive
without habitats that support them. Overuse of natural resources
is causing loss of habitats around the world.
You can help Knoxville Zoo and many
other conservation organizations around the world achieve
goals by conserving natural resources:
- Reduce your use of electricity, water,
gas and more.
- Re-use items as much as possible and
buy re-usable items instead of disposable items.
- Recycle as much as possible and buy
items that are recyclable or have been made from recycled
materials.
Challenge your family and friends
to reduce their resource consumption as well.

Recycle Your Old Cell Phone
Knoxville Zoo is partnering with RecycleFirst to participate in cell phone recycling. RecycleFirst pays $1.00 for every phone that qualifies for their recycling (not scrap phones), and all proceeds directly benefit Knoxville Zoo. Scrap phones are phones not on their list or are broken; and they will recycle the scrap
phones and their hazardous components in accordance with State and Federal
regulations. Drop off your old cell phones at Knoxville Zoo's Ranger Station or Zoo Shop to help make a difference at both Knoxville Zoo and the landfills. RecycleFirst also takes cell phone batteries, chargers, and their accessories. |
